As singer-songwriter Ava Max continues to enjoy the top ten success of breakout single “Sweet but Psycho” (the song reached number one in 26 other countries), and following the release of pride anthem “So Am I”, the artist now unleashes two more new efforts into the world to mixed results.
Bad news first. While “Freaking Me Out” has all the elements of a follow-up smash, and may improve upon multiple listens, choppy songwriting and progression keep the pop anthem of love from reaching its full potential. The mid-tempo effort creeps in with a ballad-like approach, assisted with simple guitars, then picks up the pace to promising levels once the chorus rolls around.
Detailing the realization of being uncontrollably in love with another, Max begins to grow uneasy, comparing the experience to a horror film. Referencing spider webs, mysterious dark mansions and rocking chairs moving by themselves, the artist is disturbed by how attracted she is to her new lover. “Like a spider, there's a web that you have wove, there's a heart now, where there used to be a ghost,” she sings on the hook.
“Freaking Me Out” succeeds thanks to Max’s trademark vocals, though she uses them this time to convey a more tender message. That subject matter is also commendable, spooky imagery to juxtapose feelings of adoration and anxiety. However, the numerous pieces do not come together as sharp and clean as preceding releases.

Now, for the good news. “Blood, Sweat & Tears” also tackles the tricky concept of love, with Max singing that she would die for the relationship she is currently in. Supported by pounding drums, the effort comes off more dire and urgent, as the artist celebrates an indestructible bond. Through the fights and bad times, Max keeps her eyes set on the couple’s future.
Whether the relationship in question is healthy for Max is still up for debate, but a rousing vocal performance indicates she is all in, willing to do whatever it takes to make the relationship work. “Don't go away, we can take a ride, we can take some time, yeah, some people fade, and I don't know why I can't say goodbye,” Max admits on the second verse.
Produced by frequent collaborator Cirkut, “Blood, Sweat & Tears” sounds to have more radio appeal than its Halloween-ready partner in crime. Originally leaked last year, and rumored to be the second official single from Max’s debut album (that spot ultimately went to “So Am I”), the destructively endearing number uses the artist’s strengths to the best of their abilities
Which track do you prefer? “Freaking Me Out” or “Blood, Sweat & Tears”?
