Song Review: Greyson Chance Grows Cautious of the Curious on Latest "Dancing Next To Me" Single

He got his “Boots” off the ground. Now, Greyson Chance is excited to share the official lead single off his anticipated sophomore album.

Teased for weeks, “Dancing Next To Me” differs greatly from the country-rock styling of the aforementioned previous release. The new track instead finds the artist navigating a tricky romance situation over euphoric dance beats and a striking sense of assertiveness and skepticism.

During a night out, Chance stumbles across a temporary connection. While the significant other may be uncertain of their own motives, Chance takes the lead. As he courts the curious on the dancefloor, “Dancing Next To Me” highlights the betrayal felt once the sun comes up and the love interest flees in a cloud of confusion and uncertainty.

Produced by and written alongside Teddy Geiger, the new single touches on an all too familiar scenario in the queer community. Figures unsure of their feelings and emotions seek a temporary fix or escape from their own pain. Unfortunately, they don’t consider the people they can hurt in the process.

“I was yours for the weekend, come sunrise, it's time for you to dodge your feelings, call your girl to deny, what we know is the truth, you were who you wanted to be,” Chance belts on the bridge.

While some could misinterpret “Dancing Next To Me” as predatory, of Chance taking advantage and upset at someone coming into their own, the story is told from the artist’s point of view. As someone who has personally experienced another’s coming out by an unexpected kiss at the club, it was the sense of comfort you gave another that becomes the focus.

And after sharing as important an experience as sexual liberation, for someone to then disregard or ignore you, can be a traumatic encounter to move past. In fact, “Dancing Next To Me” swirls in mixed emotions of anger, dismay and a lingering dash of hope.

"I had shared a night with someone in which we learned each other in many different ways; we were vulnerable, we were intimate, and we were together in the span of that entire night," Chance says of the single. "I thought we both understood our shared connection, but when the sun rose, he was too conflicted to continue to see me."

The accompanying music video depicts that shared night. As Chance locks eyes with an attractive male from across the room, they slowly move into the center for an intimate, charged embrace. After a few moments of heated chemistry, Chance ultimately leaves alone. Was it a waste of time, or just the closing of chapter one?
