"Tears" by Clean Bandit feat. Louisa Johnson - Single Review

English electro-pop group Clean Bandit have a prestigious GRAMMY under their sparkly belt, have amassed four Top 10 UK hits, and sent breakout track "Rather Be" to the Top 10 in the U.S., evidently giving powerhouse singer Jess Glynne a platform to begin her deserved rise, all within their short four years on the crowded music scene. With no news of new music since the release of "Stronger" with Alex Newell in early 2015, the band's announcement of "Tears" featuring The X Factor UK winner Louisa Johnson is a welcomed treat.

"Tears" has all the pieces of a big, bold, empowering anthem with Johnson's smooth, convincing vocals working effortlessly to effectively drive the message of strength home. With hints of Clean Bandit's trademark, tinkering dance production opening the new release, things quickly take a turn for the unexpected with a fast-paced, R&B-leaning delivery from Johnson, followed by a violin-assisted, energetic chorus that stays true to the band's sound while still pushing their artistic boundaries.

Early reviews of the new song have called Clean Bandit's infectious dance track an "I Will Survive" for the 21st Century (Hey PopJustice!). That's not too far off. There's a modern disco sheen placed over songwriting that details a new found strength following a tough breakup. "Tears on the ground, tears on my pillow, you won't bring me down, and I'll get over you," Johnson belts on the thrilling, emotional chorus before a second chorus is heard. That's right. Do not tackle a chorus, unless you have TWO choruses to tackle.

After the release of her winning X Factor single, "Tears" serves as Johnson's first official debut release. Pairing up with Clean Bandit was a very smart choice. Just like with their collaborations with Glynne, while the music is undoubtedly a Bandit creation, a powerful, emotive voice filled with charm is what was needed to convey the sense of liberation that carries the new tune. Johnson easily holds her own as the progression and intensity of the song quickly evolves into something bigger and better.

"Rather Be" was a pretty tough act to follow. Clean Bandit have unfortunately not been able to capitalize on their initial stateside success, but "Tears" has the power to change all that. Production is sharp and clean as we have come to expect, the signature violins add a needed dose of subtlety and Johnson's captivating vocal performance proves that she's an artist that deserves to be heard by the masses. This is far from the generic dance/pop track. This is much more.
