Meghan Markle's Favorite Shoe Designer Sarah Flint Makes Heels Comfy Enough for a Pregnant Duchess - TownandCountrymag.com

Posted: 13 Apr 2019 05:00 AM PDT

Even before Prince Harry was in the picture, Meghan Markle loved Sarah Flint shoes.

"Meghan has been a fan of the brand almost since we launched," the company's founder and namesake designer Sarah Flint tells T&C.

As an actress on Suits, Meghan was often spotted wearing the brand's styles, but it wasn't until she chose Flint's Natalie flat, a pointy-toed shoe with a subtle bow detail, for her first official outing with Prince Harry that the world's media really took notice of her affinity for the American luxury brand.

Flint says she didn't know Meghan was going to wear her shoes to the 2017 Invictus Games, and at first, she didn't quite realize just how big a deal it was.

"As Meghan had been a fan of the brand for so long, I don't think I really understand the gravity of the change, and the spotlight that was on her," Flint says. "So, of course I was excited, but had I understood the gravity at the time, I would have been even more excited."

Meghan had given Sarah Flint the kind of marketing that money simply can't buy. In terms of her ability to move product, the so-called "Markle Sparkle" is very real. And as with many items Meghan wears, the shoes quickly sold out, eventually prompting a 25,000 person waiting list. Fortunately for fans of the style, the Natalie was recently fully restocked, and is now even available in a new colorway: white.

"When any celebrity wears your shoes—and we've had really a range of incredible people, everyone from Meghan to Amal Clooney to Lady Gaga—it serves as such a validating factor," Flint says. "I feel very, very lucky."

Fortunately for Flint, Meghan's appearance in her design at the Invictus Games wasn't a one-time thing.

Meghan has continued to support the line, even wearing Flint's heels well into her pregnancy, and providing a silent endorsement of just how comfortable the shoes really are. Comfort, as it turns out, is key to the brand's ethos.

"Our shoes are made in the same factories as some of the top luxury brands, but if you look at the difference between one of our insoles and a traditional insole, it's very, very different. It's cushioned," Flint explains. "We also have arch support in a lot of our shoes."

Sarah Flint shoes also tend to feature a wider toe box than a traditional luxury shoe, and some even come with a non-stick rubber coating on the sole for durability and traction.

It appears that's just what Meghan needs to make it through her royal duties without missing a step.

Much like the Duchess, who just moved into her new home at Frogmore Cottage and is imminently expecting the arrival of her first child, Flint has a busy season ahead of her.

On April 14, her brand is launching a collaboration with artist Isabella Huffington, the proceeds of which will go to She Should Run, an organization that provides guidance to women considering running for political office.

Flint is also excited to debut a new style called the perfect sandal in May. "For summer weddings it's going to be a go-to," she says.

And while she has no immediate plans to create a line of kids shoes—can't you just imagine Meghan and her new baby in matching kicks?—Flint isn't ruling out the idea entirely.

"Someday, maybe," she says. "I'll never say no to anything."

This woman bought 204 pairs of shoes and donated them to Nebraska flood victims. - GOOD Lite

This article originally appeared on Global Citizen. You can read the original version here.

Addy Tritt just showed how donating to a good cause doesn't have to cost a fortune.

When Tritt, a 25-year-old woman from Hays, Kansas, noticed a closing sale at her local Payless shoe store, she saw it as an opportunity to give back to a community in need, according to CNN. After heavy negotiating, she convinced the store to let her purchase the shoes at a price she could afford.

The graduate teaching assistant bought 204 pairs for $100, and on Monday, the shoes (the majority of which were baby shoes), were donated to Nebraska flood victims.

"I've done huge donations in the past and this is the biggest I've ever done," Tritt told CNN. "I have this need to help people and if I can help, I'm going to do it."

Tritt didn't think about who she'd donate the shoes to until after she left Payless. She landed on Nebraska because it was one of several areas in the Midwest hit by the "bomb cyclone" in March. More than 2,000 homes were damaged by record flooding, and at least three people died.

At first, Tritt posted on Facebook, asking for help transporting the shoes to Nebraska. One woman offered to pick up some of the shoes and deliver them, but Tritt ended up donating the rest to her alma mater, Fort Hays State University. The school's Sigma Alpha agricultural sorority chapter was in the process of gathering supplies for those affected by the Nebraska floods.

Emily Bennigsdorf, president of the Fort Hays Sigma Alpha chapter, toldGood Morning they sent the shoes, and other supplies they collected, to the youth organization Future Farmers Association's Wilcox, Nebraska location.

"These families will have to build from the ground up so just being able to give them anything is a huge gift in itself," Bennigsdorf said.

She said Sigma Alpha is in awe of Tritt, but Tritt didn't donate for recognition.

"This is just part of being a human being," Tritt said. "It brings me so much joy."

The shoe donation probably won't be Tritt's last. She told CNN that she's previously organized supply drives for animal shelters and infants, and volunteered her time giving out school supplies to children in her local community. She's just getting started.

Pope kisses shoes of Sudanese leaders in plea for peace - New York Post

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:48 AM PDT

Pope Francis pleaded with South Sudanese government officials and opposition leaders Thursday to encourage the continuation of their fragile peace by getting on his hands and knees in a dramatic gesture and kissing their shoes.

"I'm asking you with my heart," the pope said to President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar during a spiritual retreat at the Vatican in Rome. "Stay in peace."

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 with the backing of many Western nations, but a civil war erupted two years later, killing at least 400,000 and displacing millions. The conflict began as a feud between forces loyal to Kiir and Machar, the New York Times reported.

Disease, hunger and human rights abuses by both sides led to the exodus of millions into neighboring countries. The pope's gesture came hours after the military in neighboring Sudan ousted President Omar al-Bashir after 30 years of authoritarian rule, according to the paper.

The pope encouraged the two leaders to find common ground before stunning both men by kneeling to kiss their shoes.

"I urge you, then, to seek what unites you, beginning with the fact that you belong to one and the same people, and to overcome all that divides you," he said. "People are wearied, exhausted by past conflicts: Remember that with war, all is lost!"
