Gamescom is arguably already one of the biggest deals in gaming, and today’s news is just making the convention an even bigger deal. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will officially open Gamescom this year, marking the first time the convention has been officially recognized by a world leader.
Understandably, Koelnmesse CEO Gerald Böse is pretty pleased by the announcement. “The participation of the Chancellor is a sign of great appreciation for us,” said Böse. “With her visit she honors the development of Gamescom into one of the most successful and largest events in the German trade fair system. She emphasizes the position of Koelnmesse as one of the leading trade fair organizers worldwide in the digital media and entertainment segment.”
In case you’re not aware, the boast of Gamescom’s size is nowhere near empty. This year’s E3 drew in over 68,000 attendees, while last year’s Gamescom packed in a whopping 345,000 people. Gamescom will begin on Tuesday, August 22nd and runs until Saturday, August 26th.
Our Thoughts
What an unexpected honor! Having Chancellor Merkel open up a gaming convention is most definitely a surprising development, but certainly one we welcome seeing. Something tells us she’s a bit too busy to play games, but we wonder what sort of titles she would gravitate to if she were given the free time to do so.
